Authors by the Bay - Patricia GatesWednesday, July 1, 2009 12:21:31 PMA life story full of adventure as an early woman journalist and U.S. Ambassador is the focus of the next “Authors by the Bay” event at the Calvert Library in Prince Frederick on Sunday, July 27.
The author, Patricia Gates Lynch who lives on the Chesapeake Bay in Scientists Cliffs, has had a distinguished career in radio and TV, in the White House as Pat Nixon’s press secretary and as former ambassador to Madagascar and the Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros. She will present her book, Thanks for Listening: High Adventures in Journalism and Diplomacy, at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. July 27 at the library.
Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor writes in the introduction: “This is a story full of life, of people, of a woman who created a splendid career for herself at a time when women were seldom heard as broadcasters. The story is a reaffirmation of the progress of women in this country over the past fifty years.”
Lynch chronicles her life from a small town in Connecticut to her marriage to a West Point cadet (later assigned to the Manhattan project), to an NBC broadcaster and to later events as Mrs. Richard Nixon’s Press Secretary for radio and television. Before her diplomatic appointment as a U.S. ambassador (where she was one of only ten women Ambassadors at the time), Lynch spent a quarter of a century with the Voice of America, where she hosted VOA’s worldwide “Breakfast Show.” With 45 million listeners, “The Breakfast Show” was consistently rated the leading program on the Voice of America. While serving on the White House staff as press assistant to Mrs. Nixon she accompanied the first Lady and the President on their official visits to many world capitals.
She is married to Lt. General Julian Johnson Ewell, U.S. Army (Ret), and has two children and two grandchildren. She is a member of the Washington Institute of Foreign Affairs, the American News Women’s Club, and the Cosmos Club.
